84 inch Bed Extension (5143B)  
1 General  
Check all parts for shipping damage. In case of damage, DO NOT use. Contact Carrier/Invacare for  
further instructions.  
To ensure the safe installation of the crossover cable service kit, these instructions must be followed:  
1.1 Symbols  
Signal words are used in this manual and apply to hazards or unsafe practices which could result in

1.2 Tools Required:  
Two 1/2 inch open end wrenches; one vice grip  
1.3 Kit includes the following:  
7000M465 Extension Weldment L.H., Qty 1; 7000M466 Extension Weldment R.H., Qty 1  
7000M469 Pull Tube End Assembly (5143/5143IVC), Qty 1  
553000M699 Link Fabric Extension with Open Hooks Attached, Qty 2  
53000M701Instruction Sheet, Qty 1  
53000M434 Bi-way Locknut, Qty 2  
54000M6412 5/16-18 x 1-inch Bolt, Qty 2  
51000M135 Helical Spring, Qty 4  
1176192 Bed Extender Sub Assembly, Qty 1

3. Separate link fabric by raising the head end and disengage the open end hooks that secure the head  
and foot springs together.

4. From the head end (H), lift up on the bed frame (I) and disengage the rivets (J) on the corner plates  
out of the corner locks (K) of the head end of bed.  
5. From the foot end (L), lift up on the bed frame (I) and disengage the rivets (J) on the corner plates  
out of the corner locks (K) of the foot end of bed.  
6. Lay bed on side and rotate head and foot spring sections to a 90° angle.  
This will allow you to disengage head spring from foot spring.  
2.2 Attach the Four Inch Extension

1. Attach four-inch extension (A) to the right and left hand sides of the foot spring frame (B) using  
5/16-18 x 1 inch bolt and bi-way locknut. Securely tighten.  
2. Reassemble foot spring to head spring.

When performing STEP 3, make sure the open-end hooks are positioned down  
towards the ground/floor.  
3. Attach the six open-end hooks (C) of the link fabric extension (D) to the existing link fabric of the  
foot spring (E).  
4. Attach one helical spring (F) to one end of the link fabric extension (D).  
5. Attach the opposite end of the helical spring (F) to one of the four mounting holes in the four-inch  
extension (A).

6. Attach second helical spring (F) to the mounting hole (H) into the four inch extension (A) on other  
side of bed frame.  
7. Using vise grips (I), secure the helical spring (F) to the link fabric extension (D).

8. To connect the link fabric extension (D) to the head spring (J), manually raise the head spring and  
attach open-end hooks (C) to the head spring.  
Make sure open end of hooks (C) are positioned down towards the ground/floor.  
9. Attach bed ends to head and foot spring assemblies.

10. Using the existing drive shaft (K), slide the bed extender sub-assembly (L) on either end and attach  
drive shaft to head and foot boards.

11. Remove existing pull tube (M) in head motor assembly or head crank assembly  
12. Install pull tube furnished with this kit in the following manner:  
For beds equipped with AC motors, use the first spring button (N)  
For beds equipped with DC motors, use the second spring button (O).

13. Reconnect pull tube (E) to head spring drive arm using the clevis (G) and cotter (F) pins.  
Bed requires an 84-inch mattress.
